Attendance Policy

This policy assumes that THE STUDENT IS ACCOUNTABLE FOR EACH AND EVERY ABSENCE.  THE ONUS IS ON THE STUDENT TO EXPLAIN AND MAKE UP WORK FOR ANY MISSED CLASSES.  Secondly, it acknowledges that class time is an essential part of acquiring a credit within the Ontario education system.  Thirdly, it makes the commitment to periodically communicate with parents about attendance, behaviour or academic performance. Office detentions will be assigned for truancy.

Attendance is taken four times each day at ADHS.  Each period attendance is recorded in the main office and is recorded on the student records and student report cards.  Teachers also keep records of student attendance.  Any unexcused absence is considered a truancy.

If no reason for the absence is recorded with the school, the automated phone system (Synervoice) will call the home phone number at 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on the day of a student’s absence.  IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENT/GUARDIAN AND STUDENTS OVER EIGHTEEN YEARS OF AGE, TO NOTIFY THE SCHOOL BY PHONE CALL OR NOTE, IN ADVANCE, IF THE STUDENT IS GOING TO BE ABSENT FOR ANY PERIOD OF THE DAY.  The automated telephone service is available 24 hours a day at 623-3183, Extension #1.

Any absences not reported in advance must be reported to the main office by 2:00 p.m. the day of the absence.  Please be aware that the phone call facilitates the sharing of attendance information with the classroom teachers and allows your son/daughter to return to classes without reporting to the office.  Any child returning from any absence, without a note or phone call from a parent, will be considered “truant”.  The notes are to state the child’s first and last name; date(s)/time of the absence; the reason for the absence; and are to be signed by a parent/guardian.

No student is to leave school property, when classes are scheduled, without signing out at the main office.  Students who become ill during the day are to report to the main office even if their absence from a classroom may be for a single period.  The office receptionist will contact a parent if the student is ill and needs to go home.

Maximum Absences – Administration reserves the right to remove a student from a course due to excessive absenteeism.
